1929년 서울에서 태어나 독학으로 미술을 공부했다. 1992년 제1회 어린이문화대상 미술부문 대상, 제17회 한국어린이도서상 일러스트 부문 문체부장관상을 받았다. 그린 책으로 『집짓기』 『재미네 골』 『땅속 나라 도둑 괴물』 ‘홍성찬 할아버지와 함께 떠나는 민속 풍물화 기행’ 씨리즈 등이 있다.
Born in 1929 in Seoul, Hong Seong-chan is a self-taught artist who has illustrated diverse publications including children’s books, textbooks, newspapers, and magazines since he first began to draw for the monthly Hope in 1955. A highly respected senior illustrator and a member of the Korea Rainbow Illustration Group (K-RIG) and the Korean Publishers Association (KPA), Hong has participated in exhibitions including the 1st Korean Board on Books for Young People (KBBY) exhibition of children’s book illustrations, an exhibition of Korean picture book illustrations to commemorate the opening of the International Library of Children’s Literature in Japan, and a 40-year retrospective of his works. In addition, he has won the 1st Grand Children’s Culture Prize, 17th Korea Children’s Book Award, and 2nd Korea Publishing Illustration Prize for his illustrations. Known for his meticulous realism, sensitive brushwork, and creative revival of traditional colors, Hong has drawn for countless children’s books such as Princess Ari and Prince Ggoggo, The Myth of Dan’gun, King Gwanggaeto the Great, The Thieving Goblin from the Underground World, Dae Jo-yeong and Balhae, The Ugly Donkey, and The Stone Bridge.
